Tony Hurley: As a former resident of Gorton, Tony met Elaine at a meeting over 10 years ago and decided to bring his 25 years experience in the environment, training and employment to help the Monastery Trust to deliver the vision of restoring the building for the local community. Tony was a trustee for several years and became passionate about understanding the Franciscan social and religious history and why they came to establish the Monastery in Gorton. During the research the building began to reveal its hidden secrets of sacred geometry, energy and light. As the Trust’s historian and tour guide Tony’s experiences have been life changing and he now shares our story with thousands of visitors every year. His fascinating book “Beggars and Builders” will be published in 2011.
Elaine Griffiths, MBE: Elaine is co-founder of the Charitable Trust that raised the £6.5 million to save and restore Gorton Monastery and found a sustainable new use for the future of this previously endangered World Monument site. Elaine is currently Chief Executive of the Monastery Manchester, the social enterprise company that operates the restored heritage site as a corporate, cultural and community venue. All profits from events held at the Monastery are donated to the Trust for the ongoing conservation of the buildings and into our charitable projects in education, skills, arts and health with the local community. The experience of delivering the Monastery project over the past 14 years has also been a life changing experience for Elaine and the work continues as we learn and understand even more of the secrets of this powerful sacred site.
